You just sent me down an architectural rabbit hole I hadn't been down in a while, Kristen. Do you remember the BEST stores?

I do indeed. We looked at these buildings briefly in Architecture school. Worth a look. I love the creativity!

How cool! The closest I've seen to a kit house was on my tour of Oak Ridge, TN, with the cookie-cutter base housing.

I remember visiting a friend in my neighborhood (where most of the houses were by the same architect), and how fun it was to discover that our kitchens had the exact same layout!

My neighborhood had a bunch of floor plans that were repeated but not super often. Our house, however, had a unique look so it was immediately noticeable when it was reused, so they only built three of them in the whole neighborhood and spread them out so you didn't see them together. As luck would have it, my best friend lived in one of the other ones, but his plan was a mirror image. When I was at his house I really liked laying down with my head upside down so that everything was laid out just like my house but the ceiling was the floor and vice versa.

My current neighborhood has about five different types of house, built fifty-ish years ago. I have two nearby neighbors who have the mirror image house to my house, which is neat. Jan liked to go for walks around the neighborhood and see what people had changed about their houses over time, as they added on and remodeled.

As part of the community service hours I needed for my internship, I did research for a local historical society. For each house in a certain old neighborhood, I documented, among other things, the official architectural style. This was ofyen tricky because of the modifications people made over time. Many of the elements that would make identification easy (or in some cases of similar styles, even possible) were changed, like windows. No way to know if they were originally a 6 over 6 or even casement or not when it's generic replacements. Lots of notes like "This house likely had two chimneys but one was seemingly removed during a reroof. Also, the original roof's material was most likely wood shingles."
