My sister-in-law used to live out west in rural Alberta. She and her partner had 2 dogs and 5 cats. We'd go for walks (no leashes) with all 7. They would all run off to explore in the woods but would regularly check back in with the human contingent. If we took the canoe down the stream, they would still follow, some in the canoe and some on the shore.
