A long time ago, when I was probably, oh, maybe 8 or 9, I was listening to this song...and singing it, when I decided the song was all wrong for me, anyway. I was a Yankee Doodle Dandy, I WAS born on the 4th of July, but I was NOT a boy...so I rewrote the song...and I've been singing it my way ever since:

I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy
Yankee Doodle do or die
A real live niece of my Uncle Sam
Born on the 4th of July!

I've got a Yankee Doodle sweetheart
He's my Yankee Doodle pearl
Yankee Doodle went to London, just to ride a pony
I am that Yankee Doodle girl!

I'm a huge patriot, but I am, for the first time in my life, deploring the United States' actions in the world. Sometimes I sing this little ditty softly to myself because I need reminding that less divisive, less selfish, less foolish times are ahead of us. God Bless the USA...not at the expense of humanity...but God bless her as we continue to evolve as a compassionate nation of immigrants, having learned from the travesty we visited upon the Native Americans who welcomed us all those years ago, to their detriment and our eventual shame. Life is complicated.

Great rewrite! My husband was born on the Third of July, so he isn't *quite* a Yankee Doodle Dandy. :)
