Puzzle Description:

#1: Thomas Genuine (Genuine) on Feb 25, 2018

smoking
#2: Kim (kjh) on Feb 25, 2018 [SPOILER]
smoking - I think is a verb or an adjective perhaps? This, to me, looks like a tuxedo jacket and bow tie. Best collective noun I can think is a 'pair of sleeves'.
#3: Gary Webster (glwebste) on Feb 25, 2018 [SPOILER]
Oh, and I was going to guess (incorrectly) a tuxedo of penguins...
#4: Shawn Sheppard (morn) on Feb 25, 2018
An intrigue of cats?
#5: besmirched tea (Besmirched Tea) on Feb 25, 2018 [SPOILER]
suit of cards or armor.

a group of Penguins is appropriately called a Waddle
#6: Norma Dee (norm0908) on Feb 25, 2018
Party
#7: Jota (jota) on Feb 25, 2018 [SPOILER]
Black Tie would be the term.
#8: Kathy Cain (kathycain) on Feb 25, 2018 [SPOILER]
A suit of mallards?
#9: Aurelian Ginkgo (AurelianGinkgo) on Feb 25, 2018 [SPOILER]
I had to look this one up. I agree with #8 - a suit of mallards.
#10: Brian Bellis (mootpoint) on Feb 25, 2018 [SPOILER]
Gary. You are correct it is a tuxedo of penguins.
#11: Kristen Vognild (kristen) on Feb 26, 2018 [SPOILER]
"A tuxedo of penguins" may not be the accurate term, but it's the one that's more colloquially known. :)
#12: Susan Duncan (medic25733) on Feb 26, 2018 [SPOILER]
Great tuxedo
#13: Joe (infrapinklizzard) on Feb 28, 2018 [SPOILER]
I thought a suit of cards as well.

BTW, "smoking" as in "smoking jacket" is a participle - a verb acting as an adjective.
It could also act as a noun, as in "I hate smoking." Then it's a gerund.
#14: Brian Bellis (mootpoint) on Feb 28, 2018 [SPOILER]
What about "I look smoking hot in this jacket"?
#15: Aurelian Ginkgo (AurelianGinkgo) on Feb 28, 2018 [SPOILER]
I'm wondering if Thomas Genuine was just describing the tuxedo as he saw it. I don't know whether it was his intention to guess at a collective noun or not. He'd have to say for himself.
#16: Joe (infrapinklizzard) on Feb 28, 2018 [SPOILER]
Brian: That's a "present" participle -- see attached photo: https://t4.ftcdn.net/jpg/01/40/48/33/500_F_140483303_tSx2uWZmYpFTBpJacOpvpnpymDwn4nno.jpg

Aurelian: Thomas is not a native english speaker so his perspective on the language is often not the same as ours. I often wonder if he is making puns in his own language (Hungarian if I recall correctly).
#17: Aurelian Ginkgo (AurelianGinkgo) on Mar 1, 2018
Cool. I can dig it.
#18: Bruce Yanoshek (yanogator) on Mar 9, 2018 [SPOILER]
"Smoking" is the German word for tuxedo, and I think it is in other European languages as well.
#20: Brian Bellis (mootpoint) on Mar 9, 2018
Okay, that the new thing I learned today.
#21: Valerie Mates (valerie) on Sep 17, 2022 [SPOILER]
Wow did I ever parse that image wrong. I was seeing a pair of scraggly legs pointing toward me as if a person was doing a sit-up, with their backside at the bottom middle of the screen, with no torso, and a barbell instead of their head. It makes a much better tuxedo!
#22: Kristen Vognild (kristen) on Sep 21, 2022 [SPOILER]
That reminds me of a lower-abs exercise we did in my Guts & Butts class at the Y. You lie on your back, with legs bent, holding a single barbell between your hands, arms stretched straight upward. While raising your torso off the mat, you lower your arms so the barbell goes between your knees. As you slowly lower your back down onto the mat, your arms return to their straight-out-above-you position.
