my mind went straight to football. for those that aren't familiar, the center, two guards and two tackles are the five offensive "linemen" that the quarterback (and other backs) stand behind before they snap the ball for a play. the defensive players (usually 3 or 4 of them) right across from those guys are the nose tackle(s) and two defensive ends and they are the defensive "linemen". so the linemen are "pretty much" the guys you see hunched down on both teams at the start of each play.
