John, do you mean The Halloween Tree, by Ray Bradbury? That tree grows jack-o-lanterns; it doesn't exactly turn into them...

The first day of fall is just around the corner. Not that that matters in AZ
#13: John Macdonald (perlwolf) on Sep 12, 2013
Sorry Kristen, not the Halloween Tree. The book I'm referring to has a magic wand, but it's stuck on the pumpkin setting - any attempt to use it turns things into pumpkins. I'll wait a bit longer before posting the title.
#14: Kristen Vognild (Kristen) on Sep 12, 2013
Definitely not the same story. :)

The story I'm referring to is "Witches Abroad" by Terry Pratchett - one of his books situated on the Discworld.
#20: Kristen Vognild (Kristen) on Sep 13, 2013
Oh, I see. I can't read Pratchett, because Douglas Adams is one of my favorite authors, and Pratchett reads like a poor imitation.

I'll attempt to give him another try, since so many people love his stories.
#21: John Macdonald (perlwolf) on Sep 13, 2013
I enjoy Douglas Adams, but his books seemed to run together - I don't think I could have read many more of them (if he had continued the "trilogy" past the fifth volume). Pratchett has lots of things in his series that recur, of course, but each book has a different major facet of our world being reflected and examined. You can read them either just for the humour, or for the social commentary on our world, or both. It's not so much a series as a collection of stories with lots of shared common ground - even the stories that focus on the same characters can be read out of order without suffering.
