I enjoyed the solve. But I am not sure I "get it." Could you elaborate please, Brian.

The horizontal clues should look familiar and it is no coincidence they make a circle.

Pi! Brilliant!

I just realized that if you use the peek at solution feature you don't get the clues. That won't help at all.
